Do you play sports? Are you wearing your mouthguard? If you play a contact sport, such as football or hockey, chances are that your league or school district requires you to wear a mouthguard. But the truth is that if you are involved in any sport or recreational activity in which there is a chance that you might receive a blow to the face, you should wear a mouthguard. This is especially true if you wear braces, since mouthguards will not just protect your teeth, but your dental work as well.

There are three types of mouthguards: stock, boil and bite, and custom-made. Stock mouthguards are available at sporting goods stores and retail outlets. You take the it out of the package and pop it in your mouth. While this is the least expensive option it also offers the least amount of protection. Boil and bite mouthguards are also purchased over the counter.

With these, you place them in boiling water to soften them. When they are cool enough, you bite down on them and they conform to the shape of your teeth and mouth. But for the best protection, you should talk with your dentist about a custom-made mouthguard. Your dentist will take an impression of your teeth, and then have a mouthguard created specifically for you.

If you or one of your children play sports, talk to our dentist, Dr. Shay Markovitch about having a custom mouthguard crafted for you.
